There are hundreds of campsites across the US and Canada, and in Europe, Australia, and many other parts of the world.
Whether you like desert areas, evergreens, lakes and mountains, or even swamps, there’s a campground to suit your tastes. You can camp on the hot sands of Arizona or Nevada. You can head to lush, green New Hampshire or Idaho and you can head south to the Ozarks.
If you’ve seen much of the US and want to expand your horizons, there are plenty of campgrounds in Canada. Although the desert and swamps will be harder to find, there are just as much or more mountains, lakes, and forests.
In the west there are dry areas, similar to eastern Washington, that offer wineries for a good rest during your trip. Farther north is frozen tundra similar to the kind that gives much of Alaska its stark beauty. To the east lie the amazing lands of Ontario and Quebec, where the lakes and forests rival anything found in Vermont or Maine.
The Rocky Mountain range in British Columbia is even larger and more impressive than in Colorado. The Rocky Mountains are a skier’s paradise, with slopes skirting most of the mountains. Skiing is not only very accessible, but if you’re a hiker, there are trails that could entertain the average hiker for days.
You may want to look even further afield by heading to Europe.
The areas of Siberia are much like Alaska, only larger than even that huge state. The Black Forest stretches out larger than some states and the variety of trees and wildlife is second to none anywhere. The Altay Mountains offer kayaking, horseback riding, rock climbing, and a dozen other activities. The similarities to the US allow you to apply your knowledge of camping in the US, while the differences will excite all your senses with the excitement of the new.
You could head south to Greece, where you’ll find sunny beaches and glorious rugged rocky hills overlooking stunning blue water. Portugal also has its own share of sunny beach campsites. Or you can take off into the mountains where locals have housed campers for generations. You can find everything from little more than bare ground to fully equipped campsites with showers, restaurants and sports activities.
Germany’s Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg is one of the most famous camping areas on the planet, and for good reason. With one of the largest lakes in the world, you won’t be short of entertainment near the water. However, brush up on a few German words. Most of the tourism comes from Germany and Switzerland and communication can be a challenge.
The UK has a hundred options in half a dozen countries. Swansea in Wales is close to the sea, while Gwynedd in the far north has spectacular blue-green mountains. Scotland has two dozen main areas, around the coast overlooking the wild seas of Orkney or high up in the Highland mountains.
