Description: The well-known Golden Retriever stands out for its medium-length golden-cream coat, which should be straight or slightly wavy and plump. His undercoat is also weather resistant. It is a well-proportioned dog measuring between 20 and 24 inches and weighing between 55 and 80 pounds, males should be larger than females. They are powerful in appearance with a friendly and affectionate expression, with large soulful eyes, pendulous medium-sized ears, and a black or brown nose on a wide muzzle. They are well balanced and robust working dogs with a soft mouth.
History: The Golden Retriever was developed in the late 19th century in the Scottish Highlands by Lord Tweedmouth. They are a cross between the Yellow Flat-Coated Retriever, the now-extinct Tweed Spaniel, other breeds of Spaniels, the Newfoundland, and possibly even the Bloodhound. They were bred not only to be good companions, but also to be very talented hunting and retrieving dogs, it is for this reason that they are so soft mouthed. They also have a good sense of smell, making them a good sniffer dog for narcotics detection. They have had a long history as therapy dogs, service dogs, and as guide dogs for the blind. They are currently the fourth most popular dog breed.
Temperament: The Golden Retriever is an intelligent, gentle, affectionate dog and a joy to be around. They are easy to train and are friendly to everyone around them, including other animals. It is highly unlikely that they will ever be aggressive, although they can be watchdogs and may bark if anyone approaches. However, they can become very nervous if they are not given enough exercise and mental stimulation.
