Sex and the City is originally an American cable television series that ran for 94 episodes on HBO from 1998 to 2004.
The film, now one of the highest rated movies, centers on four modern American women. Carrie Bradshaw, a New Yorker who has her own fashion statement. Miranda Hobbes, a lawyer with not-so-favorable views on relationships with men. Charlotte York works in an art gallery. Of the four, she is the most optimistic and Samantha Jones the oldest and most confident of the four, she is in the public relations business. She is a “sexual attempter”, which means that she will try it at least once, like the vampire in the best movies.
Carrie and Big are in a relationship and looking for an apartment. Carrie likes a penthouse, but the price is too high. Big offers to pay but Carrie hesitates. Her logic is that she will not get any part since they are not married yet. Big proposes to her, but Carrie offers to sell her own apartment.
Miranda, who has two children to care for and a career, is frustrated to learn that Steve is having an affair with another woman, while he hasn’t slept with her in the last six months. She decides to separate from him. She desperately tries to convince Carrie and Big to drop their plan to get married, arguing that marriage is not a worthwhile proposition. However, Carrie and Big decide to go ahead. Big is unable to attend the ceremony, and in a fit of rage, Carrie runs away as well. The four are intercepted en route by Big, but feeling hurt and betrayed, Carrie decides otherwise. The four friends enjoy the honeymoon reserved for Carrie and Big.
Charlotte discovers that she is pregnant. Miranda and Steve make it up after some counseling. Samantha realizes that her relationship with Smith is not working out and they break up. Charlotte goes into labor when she accidentally runs into Big at a restaurant. Big takes her to the hospital hoping to see Carrie there. Harry tries to patch things up between Carrie and Big and soon Carrie finds out that Big has been writing her love letters ever since they broke up.
Carrie forgives Big, who apologizes and proposes with his diamond shoe for lack of a ring. They get married in a simple ceremony and then throw a dinner party for their friends. The ending shows the four friends celebrating Samantha’s fiftieth birthday at the diner and Carrie toasting the next fifty.
The movie’s soundtrack released by New Line Records had new songs from top-rated movie top singers, Fergie and Jennifer Hudson.
This one of the highest rated movies just like the TV series has a dedicated following. The men may not be able to reconcile easily with the liberated and headstrong women portrayed. But ultimately, being one of the 10 best films, it is a reflection of today’s women in our society, who have not given up their values or their feminism, but want to live their lives on their terms. Actually, it is hard for American men to digest ideology. A must see for hardcore men to change their view on women.
